By LAURA ROBISON

The Progress

The annual Moapa Valley Veteran’s Day Parade and Picnic will be held on Thursday, November 11 in downtown Overton.

Presented by VFW Post 8336 in partnership with the Moapa Valley Chamber of Commerce, the parade will begin at 10:00am in downtown Overton. The route begins at Andersen St. near the Overton Library. and continues to Lewis Ave. just south of Lin’s Moapa Valley Blvd. will be closed to general traffic at 9:30am just before the parade and will reopen as soon as the parade clears.

Parade check-in is at the Overton Library from 8:30 to 9:15 am. Reserved parking at the library has been set up for the veterans.

VFW Post 8336 Commander Sterling Akers said, “This day is to recognize all veterans, not just those in Moapa Valley. We encourage all veterans from all organizations to come and join us and be represented in the parade.”

Master of Ceremony for the event will be Rick Houston and Kasen Kolhoss. The announcer booth will be located at the Infowest Parking Lot.

Bryant Robison is the 2021 Parade Grand Marshal. Robison served in Korea between 1952-1954. He spent four months as a combat soldier during some of the heaviest fighting of the war. He participated in what became the last big battle of the Korean conflict over a small, but critical, outpost at Pork Chop Hill. During his time there the fighting in Korea ended.

The MVHS marching band will participate in the parade as well as cheerleaders and local dance groups. Dozens of businesses and individuals will also have entries/floats in the parade to honor local veterans and all who served.

A special treat will be the Cheyenne High School ROTC band which has over 200 members.

After the parade, local residents are invited to a picnic in Overton Park sponsored by the Moapa Valley Chamber of Commerce. This is a free event and all food is provided.

Current Chamber president Pam Duvall said, “This is just one way we help the community. We love serving our residents. On this day, Veterans will be at the head of the line to be served first.”

The food will be cooked by the Moapa Valley Rotary, and served up by students from the Moapa Valley FFA Chapter.
