SNSO To Begin Season With Saturday Concert

The Southern Nevada Symphony Orchestra (SNSO) has been rehearsing again to prepare for its first performance in over a year. That concert will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7 pm in the Mesquite Community Theatre at 150 N. Yucca St. in Mesquite. Tickets are available in advance at the Mesquite Fine Arts Center Gallery, or at the box office before the concert.

SNSO founder, Dr. Selmer Spitzer returns to the podium with a concert featuring a variety of music sure to entertain the audience.

Mesquite resident Linda Faas will serve as the new SNSO narrator for the season.

Featured in this first season concert will be solo organist Janice Colburn. Colburn will be performing the mighty organ fanfare “Grand Choeur Dialogue” by French organist Eugene Gigout (1844-1925); and “Praise the Lord with Drums and Cymbals by German composer Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933).

Colburn started studying organ at the age of 8. By ninth grade she was studying at Capital University in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Throughout high school and college she served as the full-time organist in her Lutheran church.

Colburn holds a Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from Ohio State University where she studied with Dr. Wilbur Held.

She taught choral music in Bedford, Michigan where she directed and accompanied junior and senior high choir for ten years.

She took graduate classes at University of Michigan where she studied with renowned organist Marilyn Mason.

In 1981, Colburn moved to Mesa, Arizona where she taught choral music at the junior high level for 30 years.

Janice retired in 2011 and moved to Sun City Mesquite with her husband Tim. While here, she has played piano with the local country group “Strings and Things” and for other cultural events.

Other selection on Saturday night’s program will include Beethoven’s Symphony #6 “Pastoral”, “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius, “Bolero” by Maurice Ravel, “Pizzicato Polka” by Johann and Josef Strauss and more.
