The Progress
The Moapa Valley Art Guild (MVAG) hosted a surprise 80th birthday party for one of its own Thursday, October 28.
Jackie Worthen, a resident of Moapa Valley for over 20 years, thought she would be attending the MVAG regular ‘Gab and Dab’ that day. Instead, when she walked in to the Old Logandale School, about 35 MVAG members, neighbors and friends started singing Happy Birthday to her.
Worthen turned 80 years old on October 25. She said that she was not expecting anything like this recognition. “I am surprised, overwhelmed and almost speechless!” she said.
Worthen has been involved with the MVAG for about 18 years, even serving as its president for seven of those years.
MVAG current president, Annetta Romero, said Worthen is an essential part of the MVAG. “If it’s gotta get done, she’s gonna do it,” Romero said. “Jackie is dependable, organized, focused, honest, and fun to work with. I trust her and love her.”
Overton resident Bonnie Koopman, who has been a neighbor of Worthen’s for over 20 years, stated, “Jackie has been great for the Art Guild and for the Pomegranate Festival.”
“Jackie has been supportive of my art, friendly, and took me under her wing about 5 years ago,” said local artist and MVAG member Susan Perez.
A potluck lunch was served complete with birthday cake. Worthen said she enjoyed every minute of it.
“I love this valley, it is beautiful and peaceful,” Jackie said. “People help people here. And I love the Art Guild. I am proud of their art programs, shows, and especially the scholarships that are given out each year.”
