The Rooster Cottage Consignment store in Mesquite was jam packed full of happy shoppers at its semi-annual open house event on Saturday November 13. From 10 am to 4 PM patrons were treated to free gifts, refreshments, raffle prizes, fantastic deals and terrific customer service.

The Rooster Cottage is a mom-and-pop consignment and gift shop owned by long time locals and sisters-in-law, Dana Bulloch and Carol Bulloch.

Excited patrons were treated to Danielle’s Snowy White Popcorn, water bottles, a free Christmas ornament or gift bag and the chance to win a $10 Rooster Cottage gift certificate. The shop is full of Christmas décor, novelty furniture items, jewelry and unique gifts.

“We worked 12 hours straight to get this place ready for today,” says Angelina Noel, an employee of 9 years. “We completely shut the store on Friday to make sure our inventory was displayed just right. We just really wanted everything to look special for today’s event.”

Dana Bulloch said that it was impossible to express how thankful she was to the community. “Our sweet Carol wasn’t able to be with us for the sale, but we all have worked so hard to get ready for this event,” said Bulloch. “Everyone was so patient and kind with us today.”

A line began to form outside the Rooster Cottage 30 minutes before the store even opened its doors. When it was time to welcome guests inside, more than 30 people were gathered and waiting at the entrance, ready to shop.

“This is the largest crowd we have ever had!” exclaimed Dana. “Usually, we get 10 or so people at a time milling throughout the store. This is huge.”

At one point, the purchase line had grown so large that Dana offered to create a new line for people paying in cash who didn’t mind a handwritten receipt.

“We are just a little mom and pop shop, and we are just doing the best we can to keep up,” she said. “We have never had this many people in here at once. How wonderful for so many people to come out and support us!”

For more than 10 years now, the people of Mesquite have been coming to the Rooster Cottage’s semi-annual sales and keeping them in business.

“We have gotten to know so many people in the community and their stories,” Dana said. “It has meant so much to us that so many wonderful people have kept us in business. We get good stuff, and we sell good stuff and we have the best cards in town. Really, we just love what we do.”

The Rooster Cottage was on the brink of closing forever in early 2020, just after Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak ordered all non-essential businesses to close. After being shut down for two months straight, the Bulloch sisters decided to reopen ahead of any official directive, because as Dana says, “we were going to be forced to close one way or another. Either they would shut us down for defying “non-essential” business orders or we were going to have to close because we simply couldn’t pay our bills as a closed business.”

Luckily, the “all clear” for businesses to reopen came shortly after that and all was well.
“Our open house went really great and once again,” Dana concluded. “I need to say thank you so much to this wonderful community. I really just want everyone to know how grateful we are for your support.”

  1. I have just moved to Mesquite, but your shop sounds like one I look forward to visiting. See you as soon as I find a place to live.
