Cancer HELP Society Seeks Help For Family In Need

The Mesquite Cancer HELP Society is, once again, rushing to the aid of a local family impacted by cancer. And this time, the Society is asking for the community to rally and support this struggling family as well.

“It isn’t very often that we run across a situation where we appeal to the community for some urgent help for a specific family,” said Mesquite Cancer HELP Society Founder and President Yoli Bell. “In fact, in 21 years of doing this I can only think of three times. But this is clearly one of those times where a local neighbor really needs help.”

Local resident Phillip Palomo was diagnosed earlier this month with differentiated liposarcoma and is expected to undergo surgery in the next couple of weeks. In recent weeks Palomo has been unable to work to help support a family of seven children that he and his wife are raising.
“It has been a difficult time for them,” Bell said.

Helping local families is customary for Bell and the Society. Usually cancer sufferers come to the Society requesting help with some treatment costs or transportation costs, Bell said. There is a short application process and a thorough review of medical records to verify that the need is valid. Then the Society quickly mobilizes resources to help the local families.

The Society staff has already helped the Palomo family in applying for Medicaid to mitigate some of the medical costs they face. They have also tried to help with some of the more urgent household expenses.
“We are doing all we can to make sure (Mr. Palomo) is given as much medical assistance as possible,” Bell said. “And we are addressing any unexpected costs that may arise from his cancer.”

But the Palomo’s situation was especially dire, Bell said. “During this difficult time, they have zero income and zero insurance,” Bell said. “And the holidays are approaching. This is a situation where we bring in the public and ask for help.”

Donations from the public can be sent directly to the Mesquite Cancer HELP Society in the name of the Palomo Family. This ensures that the family gets the help it needs. And the non-profit Society also provides a tax-deductible vehicle through which donations can be made to the Palomos.

For those wishing to be sure that the money is being spent appropriately, the Society has even set up a file at their office which allows those donating to receive updates on how the money is being spent for the family.

Donations may be brought into the Society office at 150 N. Yucca Street #36 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 am to 3 pm, and Thursdays from 10 am – 1pm. The office will be closed on Thanksgiving Day this week.

Donations can also be mailed to The Palomo Family; C/O Mesquite Cancer HELP Society; PO BOX 1416; Mesquite, NV 89024.

Finally donations can be made through a PayPal link located on the Society website at http://www.cancerhelpnv.com/donations.html. A comment can be left indicating that the donation is specifically made for the Palomo Family.
“Any amount is welcome, large or small,” Bell said. “Everything will go to help this family in a time of need.”
