The Clark County Parks and Recreation (CCPR) hosted the annual Moapa Turkey Bowling on Wednesday, November 24. The traditional annual event held at the Moapa Community Recreation Center has participants bowling with frozen turkeys as bowling balls to win a variety of prizes.

CCPR Recreation Specialist Elmer Lopez stated that, by all accounts, turkey bowling has been going on for more than 20 years in Moapa.
“Of course we didn’t have one last year,” Lopez said. “But this year, it went really well. We had almost 50 people attend and/or participate.”

The participants were divided into five different age categories including school grade levels Pre-K, K-1, 2-3, 4-5. There was also an adult division so that the grown-ups could get in on the fun. There was no middle school or high school category as there has been a lack of participants within those age groups.Any within that age group were put into the adult category.

There were smiles and laughs as kids and adults got to bowl and watch each other try to bowl with slips and falls or with hard drops of the frozen birds. The bowling balls for adults were a full size turkey. The middle age groups bowled with a chicken. The young-uns were given a Cornish Hen to bowl with.

The birds were prepped with duct tape and packaging tape to form handles for throwing them down the “middle” of the alley. Each green pin knocked down was worth one point while the special turkey pins were worth ten points each.

When all was said and done the winners of each category got (what else?) frozen turkeys for Thanksgiving. Second place got a pumpkin pie and third place won pumpkin cookies.

In the Pre-K division, both winners and participants each got a sugar cookie for their sweet teeth.
The winners were the following: Pre-K: 1st-Abby May, 2nd-Scout Sisam, 3rd-Nadia Lopez; K-1: 1st-Kyle Shakespear, 2nd-Salvador Jauregui, 3rd-Ramsay Sisam; 2-3: 1st-Colton Vadasy, 2nd-Elena England, 3rd-Jaime Jauregui; 4-5: 1st-Peyden Sisam, 2nd-Zane Shakespear, 3rd-Dylan Moore; Adult: 1st-Kirstie Shakespear, 2nd-Blane Vadasy, 3rd-Toby Wood

“I practiced already and went with school to Mesquite to go bowling there,” said K-1 Champion Kyle Shakespear when asked how he prepared for the annual Turkey Bowl.

The Shakespear family seemed to come out as the top “birds” in turkey bowling as they had two champs and a second place winner in the event. In fact, Kirstie Shakespear placed for the second straight event in a row as she placed 3rd in the Adult Category in the 2019 event.

“It is fun to be here,” said Elmer Lopez. “It is nice to have the event this year and continue the tradition on. It has been great to see Turkeys bouncing and tumbling down the lanes again.”

Clark County Parks and Recreation will be starting winter sports right after the Thanksgiving weekend.

  1. Parents. What are you thinking? Why do you want to Desensitize your children to grow up learning to disrespect other beings? All beings that do nothing wrong, deserve respect.
Especially those who cannot speak for themselves. Your children who you allow to participate in this gross, sick and sad bowling “game” are learning to think it is okay and “fun” to kick all animals around.. When that is no longer “fun” enough, they may start kicking other children around. You are raising BULLIES.!! Some of these kids may not want to throw turkeys or any other animal around. But they will, so you don’t criticize and belittle them. They probably will grow up to disrespect you, as parents too..
THIS IS REALLY SICK AND SAD. BOTH FOR THE TURKEYS AND FOR THE CHILDREN. .
