The Virgin Valley High School Orchestra, Guitar and Choir classes kicked off the season with a beautiful holiday concert last week for family and friends. On Tuesday evening, Nov. 30, the music students, under the direction of teacher Marie Palmer, set the tone for the 2021 holiday season.

It was a welcome performance after a year of COVID. Many audience members commented on how much they had missed attending the school music concerts last year.

First on the program was the VVHS Orchestra. They presented several holiday-themed pieces including “Walking in a Winter Wonderland”, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and “Jingle Bell Rock”.

Though the orchestra is small in numbers, they sounded great and really had the crowd moving and dancing with the familiar holiday tunes!

Next up was the members of guitar class, also small in numbers. They also played Christmas themed music. After getting the crowd into “It’s Beginning to Look A lot Like Christmas”, the students closed it out with a soul-stirring rendition of “The Little Drummer Boy”. The playing was heartfelt and the beauty of the music brought a peaceful silence among the audience.

Finally, the VVHS Choir brought took the concert home. They also sang a couple of Christmas songs, and a beautiful version of “I’ll Fly Away”.

The choir began its segment with a Christmas medley and the crowd was invited to join in. They ended the night with a fun song that had some good old fashioned “hand jiving” and that was a treat to the audience.

The concert was a beautiful way to enter the month of December and to kick off the holiday season. Although the numbers were small in all three classes, the students were all very talented and pulled their performances together and delivered. The friends and families there watching were not disappointed.
