Just in time for Christmas, two ladies celebrated their graduation from the Breaking the Cycle Program at the Mesquite Municipal Court on Tuesday afternoon, December 21.

The courtroom was packed to standing room only with family, fiends, and supporters of the two female graduates from the Breaking the Cycle Program. This program is strongly supported by Judge Ryan Toone, who could not be present at the ceremony due to illness. Judge Ruth Kollhoss from Moapa Justice Court presided instead.

Court case worker Mike VanHouten informed the spectators about the program and the accomplishments each of the ladies had attained in order to graduate.

The first graduate, who asked not to be named had accomplished a total of 519 days of sobriety while in the program. She has found and maintained full-time employment at a local retailer, as a valued employee. She shares her new sober life with her eight-year-old daughter. They are living in safe, independent housing. As part of the program, she had also received her CPR certification and obtained a G.E.D.

Speaking to the full house of supporters, the woman said, “I am like the caterpillar who changes. I am now the butterfly; I now have wings and I’m grateful for my family and all who believed in me.”

The other graduate, Connie Ramirez, has achieved 512 days of sobriety while in the program. She has obtained long-term employment at the local heritage museum where she has found her love of community and history.

Ramirez’ case worker said she has gone above and beyond with her historical work at the museum. Connie gave birth to a little girl while participating in the Break the Cycle program and has rebuilt strong family bonds with her immediate family and her seven-year-old daughter.

Ramirez spoke to the crowded courtroom, but was overwhelmed with emotion. Lindy Hulet, program Administrator, stepped up to help read her speech.

Ramirez managed to say “I missed the feeling of peace I had before my addiction, I want to thank everyone who helped me.”

Both ladies received many gifts and flowers offered from friends and from local businesses. The most special gift given to each lady – and to all the graduates of the Breaking the Cycle program – is a beautiful hand-made quilt personalized to the receiver in pattern and colors. They are kindheartedly made by one local individual who prefers to remain anonymous.

The City of Mesquite strongly supports the Breaking the Cycle program. Many City Officials attend these graduation ceremonies to show support to the graduates and to the program. Members of the Police Department and Fire Department offer support to the program participants.

Breaking the Cycle of Drug and Alcohol addiction is the goal. It is a life changing program for those who can reach graduation. There is plenty of community support for participants of this time-proven program.
