A Republican contender for the U.S. Congress made a campaign visit to Mesquite last week. U.S. Congressional District #4 candidate Sam Peters held a Meet & Greet event at the 1880 Grill in Sun City Mesquite on Friday evening, Jan. 14. A crowd gathered there to meet Peters and ask him questions.

The crowd got more than they expected. Peters also brought along Stan Hyt who is running for Clark County Sheriff and Katie Williams, a member of the Clark County School District Board of Trustees.

Peters is an Air Force Veteran, Bronze Star Recipient and a business owner in Las Vegas. This is his second run for this Congressional seat. He ran for the seat in the 2020 Republican Primary and lost to Jim Marchant. Marchant then went on to the general election where he lost to Rep. Steven Horsford (D-Las Vegas).

Peters said that he is a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment. “Horsford is a big gun grabber,” Peters said. “He wants to take your guns away.”

Peters said that the current Administration has strayed from the Constitution and securing the rights it promises. “This administration has turned its back on the American citizens and the Constitution,” he said. “The key thing we have to do as a nation is bring back our sovereignty.”

Peters said that the federal government means to return to ensuring border security and stop the catch and release policies, like Trump did. We need to have federal and state agencies working together.

Peters mentioned he has aligned himself with the Freedom caucus in Washington where two of its members have endorsed him. He stated he believes the Freedom Caucus is the only true Constitutionally-grounded group in Washington.

Peters asserted the need for due process and the need for accountability when found guilty, but not before.
Peters stated that he has the best chance out of all his other opponents of ousting Horsford.

Hyt and Williams were there to endorse Peters’ candidacy. Also endorsing Peters was Mesquite Mayor Al Litman who was in attendance at the event.

CCSD Trustee Williams talked about her position on the Board. She said that she is the only conservative on the board. Williams said that she hopes more people will stand up and run for CCSD board positions. “I alone cannot keep poor school policies from being passed,” she said.

Sheriff candidate Stan Hyt has served on the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for 30-years. He promised that he would not support forced mask or vax mandates like Sheriff Lombardo is doing. He also insisted that he would not allow police to close down churches and small business due to the pandemic.

In addition, he said he would see that Metro cooperate with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“We are a Constitutional country and the police will not participate in unconstitutional requests, “ Hyt said. “We are here to protect and serve its people lawfully.”

Guests were able to get plenty of time with the candidates getting questions answered at the event.
