A Mesquite resident has already thrown a hat in the ring to run for City Council this year. Local realtor Karen Fielding officially announced her candidacy last week in an interview with The Progress.

Fielding made the announcement on Wednesday, Jan. 19 which was a significant date to her personally. It was the 27th anniversary of Fielding moving to Mesquite from Portland, Oregon where she grew up.
“It was kind of a landmark to me, having been here 27 years,” Fielding said. “And I felt like what better day to announce that I would be running for City Council.”

“You know, I’ve been able to enjoy the City of Mesquite all these years,” Fielding added. “And I love Mesquite as much Today as I did the day I moved here.”

Fielding has spent her years in Mesquite being heavily involved in the community. She has been an active member of the local Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. She is a member of the Golf Fore Kids committee. She has also served on community planning boards providing input on transportation planning, community master planning and more.

She has been the driving force in planning community parades for Virgin Valley High School graduates during the two years of the pandemic.

“I have raised my three kids here and have been involved in education and other civic roles,” Fielding said. “Now I am running for City Council because I feel that I can make a difference or help the community make a difference.”

With all of that involvement over so many years, Fielding said that she has become well connected with different people and groups in the community. That positions her well to be able to represent everyone on the City Council, she said.

“Running for Mesquite City Council is a non-partisan position,” Fielding said. “I have always been able to be a voice for the kids, the families and for retirees and I want to represent all Mesquite residents. I know that I can be that person on the council to do that when it most counts.”
