“Journey to a Journal” To Be Explored In LCM Class

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a journal from start to finish? “Journey to a Journal” is an 8-week course for people ages 55 and older during the months of May and June 2022. The first class begins on on May 3. The course will be held at the Lost City Museum on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 am to 11:30 am.

The course is limited to just 10 people so those interested are encouraged to call the museum to register soon.
“Because of the generosity of the Nevada Arts Council and Federal Endowment for the Arts, we are able to provide a fun and creative project-based class with the goal of inspiring creative living for aging adults,” said Mary Beth Timm of the Lost City Museum

Artist and author Jana Ward will be instructing this 8-week course. Participants will learn to make paper, design signatures (book pieces), and bind pages in a custom cover. The final product can be used as a journal, a recipe book, art book, or in any number of ways.

This 8-week course will culminate with a capstone event on July 19. The Lost City Museum will host an afternoon tea with participants talking about their finished journals.

“I’m excited about this class because I believe that creativity adds a positive aspect to life,” said Jana Ward. “Science says that creative activities stimulate problem-solving skills. I chose journal-making (from papermaking to book design and structure) for this class because of the high interest in genealogy and family history in our community. The class will help participants to walk away with a personally made book as well as the skill to create volume #2.”

The Lost City Museum is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday at 721 S. Moapa Valley Blvd., Overton. Admission is $6, children 17 and younger and members enter free.
