A sizeable crowd enjoyed a great pancake breakfast on Saturday morning, May 7 as part of the Mesquite Days celebration last week. The traditional Mayor’s Breakfast was held just before the Mesquite Days Parade at the Family Heritage Park.

The food for the event was prepared by members of the Mesquite Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their volunteer helpers. Pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage links and juice were enjoyed by attendees.

A sociable crowd appreciated the food and folks lingered to socialize with one another. Mesquite Mayor Al Litman did his share of mingling with the crowd.
“A special thanks to the LDS High Council for doing all the hard work and making the Mayor’s Breakfast such a special event,” Litman said.

It was the first time that local residents Curt and Marie Hansen attended the mayor’s breakfast. “I thought the food was good” Curt said. “We intend to spend the morning watching the Parade and then watch the Kentucky Derby at the Elks Lodge.”

It is tradition at the Mayors breakfast to make the mayor a giant pancake. That tradition was kept on Saturday. Five cooks stood over the giant pancake trying to figure out how to flip it with the small spatulas they had available to them. With teamwork, they made a dramatic toss and flipped it over, nearly missing the griddle entirely. The huge pancake ended up just a little smaller, as one end went off the grill during the flip. The pancake crew even got the mayor over to help them remove it from the grill.

The mayor posed for pictures with the giant pancake with little, seven-year-old Azaria Sellner, who was excited about the size of the pancake.

Some of the candidates for the upcoming primary elections were in attendance at the breakfast. These included US Congressional candidate Annie Black, Mesquite city council candidate Pattie Gallo, Assembly District 19 candidates Toby Yurek and Gerald Swanson and City Councilwoman Karen Dutkowski. Swanson even lended a hand in helping to serve the food.

“This is one of the largest crowds in recent memory,” Mayor Litman said. “The entire weekend was highly successful with many families coming out to enjoy all the activities that Mesquite Day’s offered.”
