Local clergy members and parishioners came together on Thursday May 5, to observe a National Day of Prayer, held locally at the new First Baptist Church facility on Hafen Lane.

Mesquite churches have gotten together to hold this annual event for many years. The prayer meet ing has usually been held outdoors at the Pioneer Park. But meeting in the new First Baptist Church this year made the gathering even more special.

“The National Day of Prayer is a day that all people can come together and exalt a risen Lord with praises and prayers asking Him to intervene in our problems and heal our land,” said First Baptist Pastor Bill Montgomery.

Even though there was plenty of competing events going on within the community last week, there was still a healthy crowd of nearly 150 people in attendance.

Eight different churches and their pastors participated in the event. Each Pastor was to lead a prayer on the given topic assigned to them by event organizer Pastor Billy Montgomery of the First Baptist Church.
Pastor Wendy Swanson of Mesquite United Methodist prayed for the family.

Pastor Duke Taber of Mesquite Worship Center prayed for the churches. Pastor Ros Doyel of Valley Presbyterian Church, was assigned to pray for local businesses. Pastor Justin Mosher of the first Baptist Church was assigned to pray about education. Pastor Bob Bergman, of the Prince of Peace Lutheran prayed for the U.S. military.

Pastor Michael Quinton of Mesquite Baptist Church was assigned to pray for the government. Taking his place at the podium, Quinton announced his topic and began to walk away, drawing laughter from the audience. He returned and reminded the audience that God had instructed that we were to pray for our kings and leaders not to follow Satan’s ways.

Pastor Dennis Lee of Living Water Fellowship was asked to pray for Arts, Entertainment and Media.
Pastor Bruce Wisenhunt of Christian Community Church prayed for the World.

The meeting opened with the pledge to the flag and singing of the National Anthem. Led by Lindsay Mosher. Each Pastor gave a short talk about their topic and relationship with God and then led a prayer for their topic.

The Audience joined in singing “America the Beautiful” and “God Bless America” led by Marie Palmer.
Attendee, Cathey Bigbey said “It was wonderful to be in the Church, the program was wonderful and so needed.”

Paster Montgomery reminded the audience: “As individuals we can and should pray daily, weekly, monthly for these same things. It is the right thing to do.”
