Mesquite Senior Games Director Amy Bradshaw (left) presented a check for $3,200 to Mesquite Department of Athletics and Leisure Service Director Nick Montoya during a City Council meeting last week.

Two community athletic groups made special presentations of appreciation to the City of Mesquite Department of Leisure Services during a City Council meeting held on Tuesday, May 10. The check presentations came from the Virgin Valley Little League (VVLL) and from the Mesquite Senior Games organizations.

The first presentation was made by Mesquite Fire Chief Jayson Andrus, who was acting in his role as VVLL President.

Andrus said that this season has been a good one for the little league organization which is in its tenth year. The VVLL had 193 athletes playing in 18 different teams this season, Andrus said.

Andrus acknowledged that the Little League partners with the City of Mesquite which provides the fields and all of the equipment for the league. To show apprecation for this, the VVLL gives 80 percent of the revenue from its registration fees to the City to continue providing those services, Andrus said.
Andrus then presented a check for $10,820 to Department of Athletics and Leisure Services Director Nick Montoya.

Next, Amy Bradshaw, Director of Mesquite Senior Games came forward for another presentation. Bradshaw announced that her organization was presenting a check for $3,200 also to the Department of Athletics and Leisure Services.

Bradshaw explained that these funds would be used to purchase a new ice machine for the Old Mill concession stand.
“What is neat about that is that the Old Mill ballpark has a really short field,” Bradshaw said. “So it is used almost exclusively for youth sports – not only our local Little League, but also youth sports from all over the place. So that brings a lot of economic development to the city.”

Bradshaw said that she appreciated the work that Montoya and his department do to support the Mesquite Games events.
“I appreciate the partnerships that we have with the Senior Games and the Little League,” Montoya added during the presentations.
