A Sunday afternoon concert was hosted by the Rotary Club of Mesquite on May 15 to acquaint people with the local Rotary Club and what it does.

While the Rotary Club of Mesquite does sponsor the Concerts at the Library, they do many other services for the community as well. They offer scholarships to local graduates. They have provided “buddy benches” around the city, and built the Batting cages by the Rec. Center. Sending local kids to leadership camp and helping out the school children at Beaver Dam with the backpack program and the Shoebox Program.

Rotarians do these things while having fun with social meetings and fundraising with fun events. For example, the annual “Mudd Volleyball Tournament” is coming soon.

The Rotary Club of Mesquite meets at noon on Tuesdays at the Library. They are known as the noon Club. There is a Sunrise Rotary Club that meets on Thursdays at 7:30 am at CSN Mesquite campus. Both Clubs are always welcoming new members.

The noon club provided beverages, sandwiches and other snacks at the concert. The crowd listened first to a sentimental Journey in song, sung by the Glory Girls: Cyndy Good, Diane McClure and Doris Points.
“We ladies have been singing together for many years for the Glory of God,” said Good.

Next came the big band sounds from “Dry Heat” Everyone at the plaza that day knew how the band arrived at the name, “Dry Heat” It was 108 degrees out that afternoon. Rotary provided shade structures, but kudo’s must be given to the Glory Girls and the band members for sticking around and entertaining the crowd in the heat while displaying real professionalism.

The “Dry Heat” music was soft and enjoyable with plenty of old favorites. Perfect for a day when it was too hot to dance.

Rotarian Deborah Stephen, who is also one of the three founding members of the Library Concert series, along with Rotarian Norman Utley and Librarian Judi Sargent, acts as MC at these events.
Stephen told the attendees, “The special requirements to be a Rotarian are, people that want to make Mesquite and the world a better place. We need people to attend meetings and help in projects to make good things happen.”

The popular Concerts will end the season on May 28 with The Mesquite Café Blues band. It will go dark for the summer and resume again in the fall with another lineup of local artists.
