Four students at Beaver Dam High School were celebrated last week for their plans to attend college next fall at Utah Technical University (formerly known as Dixie State University) in St George, Utah.

UTU representative Katelyn Peterson came to Beaver Dam High School on Wednesday, May 18 to formally welcome the four graduates who had applied and were accepted to matriculate at the University.

The BDHS administration decided to add to the students honor by holding a signing party for the four students, similar to what the colleges do for in-coming athletes. The students’ families were invited to attend and there was an air of excitement at the event.

The four students include Olivia Cobian, who plans to major in English; Donovan Peterson, who plans to major in film and marketing; Jasmine Gomez, who plans to major in social and behavioral science; and Angelica Ruiz, who will major in marketing and accounting.

Each student is receiving a small scholarship and are being permitted to pay in-state-tuition at the University. At the sign-in party they were given a swag bag from UTU and welcomed as new Trailblazers. In fact, they were the very first students to receive the newly named Utah Technical University swag. The new name at the school just became official.

The students were excited about their UTU Hats and Trailblazer t-shirts.
Proud father Rigo Cobian, expressed high hopes that his youngest daughter Olivia will stay in college.
“My oldest, and so many other young people, just start to work and get stuck in that environment and do not continue going to college,” Cobian said. “But Olivia is going to finish.”

Peterson is in the admissions Department of Utah Tech. She said she will also be going to Virgin Valley High School to welcome these students as well.

Everyone enjoyed a piece of cake which was decorated to read “Congratulations Trailblazers.”
BDHS teacher Wendy Wolf-Killinger told the students how much she would miss them. BDHS Principal and District Superintendent Darlene McCauley ended the event by stating, “Congratulations to the families for having such awesome kids!”
