The Progress
The annual Women’s Spring Tea and Hat contest was held at the Mesquite Women’s History and Culture Center (WHCC) on Saturday, May 21.
The beautifully set tables created the mood for the ladies in the fun hats to socialize in an elegant, fun way that only a group of fun-loving ladies can accomplish.
Tea bag choices were on the tables, as were teapots containing the hot water. Finger sandwiches were served first, then came the scones with three flavor choices. Then came the warm banana nut bread, ending with chocolate mints. All of this was being served by the organizers of the event, Rei Romney, Kim Erickson, Miriam Samuels, not serving but a definite helper for the event, Dave Greatwood.
There was a so much chatter and laughter going on that the servers were having a bit of difficulty interrupting long enough to serve the goodies. The servers did their best to keep the hot water coming.
The hat contest had three categories, Cute-as-a-button, Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and Kentucky Derby Hats.
The winner for Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend was Miriam Samuels for her diamond playing cards-studded hat. Bobbie Green won the Kentucky Derby contest with her blingy horse head hat. Cute as a Button went to Nancy Banes for her artful and skillful button-decorated hat.
“This is the most rewarding day I have spent since I attended my college women’s events,” said participant Diane Hermosa said. “These ladies and the culture center are my new friends and I love that they do these beautiful events.”
