Summer Fun At The Rec Center

By JAIRO VALLEJO

The Progress

School is out for summer and many are wondering what there is to do in Mesquite to keep kids busy. The Mesquite Athletics and Leisure Services Department has a variety of summer events and programs that are geared for kids of all ages.

The most popular attraction of the summer is the outdoor pool. The pool is now open Monday through Saturday from noon – 6:00 pm. Kids will be able to enjoy all the amenities that come with the outdoor pool such as the play gym, slide, and diving board. If patrons want to avoid the heavy traffic during the day, early morning lap swimming will be available.

Basketball and indoor pickleball are also being offered inside the center. Children 10 and older are able to utilize the Recreation Center without parent or guardian supervision. Children 9 and below must be accompanied by a guardian of 16 years or older.

The Manta Ray Swim team returns this summer led by stellar instructors Nayeli Andrade, Neil Anderson, and Connor Zarate. All three of these coaches recently took a trip to NIAA 3A regionals for the Virgin Valley High School swim team. Kids ages 6 to 17 are welcomed to join the swim team. The team will have swim meets at Kanab, Hurricane, and Dixie. Official practices start May 31. Registration is $100 for the first child, and $90 on any additional child.

Kids may also sign up for Youth Summer Dodgeball beginning on Thursday, June 16. This is a 6-week program that will be held every Thursday. Age divisions will meet at different times for this activity. Ages 7-8 will play at 5:15 pm. Ages 9-10 will start at 6:15 pm. Ages 11-13 will play at 7:15 pm. Registration may be done for the whole season or it can be done with a $6.00 nightly drop-in fee.

Adult programs are also being offered by the Athletics and Leisure Services Department. Geared towards individuals 50 and better is the Lifelong Program. It is a fully-loaded schedule with classes everyday Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 12:00pm. The program offers a multitude of classes such as yoga, pilates, strength & more, water aerobics, zumba, tai-chi, dance classes, and much more.

The Athletics and Leisure Services Department also has privately contracted instructors who offer classes. These include HIGH Fitness, Tough Country Fitness, Thrill Hip Hop, Spin Classes, Rhythm Dance, and a variety of other subjects.

The Rec Center will be celebrating the Independence Day from 10:00am to 3:00pm on Monday, July 4. There will be poolside festivities such as water bounce houses, water balloon games, dunk tank, prizes, music and more.
