No One Asked Me But… (June 22, 2022)

By DR. LARRY MOSES

No one asked me but… I have again begun to walk two or three miles a day. Those who know me, remember that I once walked from three to five miles a day, often in the heat of summer. Then I ran into some problems when my heart decided to agree with many who thought I was crazy and decided it was time it shut me down. I have since had a triple by-pass surgery which has allowed me to return to my walking routine.

I now walk two to three miles a day when the temperature is under 110 degrees. One hundred and ten will usually keep me inside. My problem today is not my heart or breathing. It is my legs that are in rebellion. My legs want to know who transplanted them on to some idiot who would walk two to three miles in a southern Nevada summer.

I have established three or four regular routes that will meet my two to three mile walk limit. I have met new people and many of their dogs as I walk.

I love how dogs bark as I walk by their house. The owners don’t like it and often chastise the animal. I often comment to the owner that they should not scold their dog as it is only doing its job. A stranger is near and they are earning their keep by warning their master.

I met Annie, a poodle/golden retriever mix, who was escorting her owner on a walk. After our introduction she became quite friendly.

There is an Irish Setter on one of my walks who often greets me with a ball in her mouth. I found early she does not want me to take the ball and throw it. She merely wants me to know she has a ball.

I met a sanitation worker and we exchanged greetings. As he was loading trash at the grade school, I cautioned him to be careful for it was a hot day. He probably realized that, but he pleasantly accepted my stupid remark.

When I got to the fire department, he had also arrived and again we exchanged pleasantries. As I walked on I heard a shout and saw him running toward me. I was a bit surprised, but I stopped and he handed me a bottle of ice-cold water.

I explained I was just a half a mile from home and finishing a two mile walk and really didn’t need the water because it was only 105 degrees out. He insisted that I drink it anyway. I believe we both parted shaking our heads. Me, surprised that he cared enough to share his water. He undoubtedly wondering how this old fool escaped from the home.

All this has been said to convey some of the thoughts that go through my head as I walk in the heat of the Moapa Valley.

Did you ever wonder how deep the ocean would be if there were no sponges in it?

How about since the ecologists have now determined that the cement in the cities has caused global warming, how much global warming is caused by all the solar panels that adorn the Moapa Valley Desert?

If the burning of fossil fuels is causing the polar caps to shrink, what caused it to shrink over the millions of years when it covered the entire North American continent all the way to the Gulf of Mexico? Did the dinosaurs expel that much gas?

Here is a thought that some of you science geniuses might be able to answer. It sure perplexes this poor social study major. If you can charge the battery of your car by driving it, why could you not develop a system where by you charge the batteries of an electric car as you drive it? Why not have two sets of batteries, one set charged by the front wheels and one set charged by the rear wheels. It seems you could use one set to drive while the other set charges. As the charge runs out, you could switch to the other and recharge the batteries you have used.

Here are a few other weird thoughts I have had as the sun beats down.

If the black box flight recorder is never damaged during a plane crash, why isn’t the whole plane not made of the stuff?

Why is there an expiration date on sour cream?

Taxation without representation may be bad but taxation with representation is not so hot either.

If you are going to solve the gun problem by taking guns from law abiding citizens, why not solve the DUI problem by taking the driver’s license from those who drive sober?

No one asked me but… I was thinking it is time for the State of Nevada to go to an open primary. Why should the state of Nevada go to the cost of holding an election to determine who the Democratic or Republican or any other party candidate should be? The closed primary system presently in effect in the State disenfranchises nearly one-third of the people of Nevada. Those of us who are not blind party members really have no vote, as we can only vote for three positions within the State

Let me state up front, I don’t believe the last presidential election was won by Joe Biden because of a fraudulent election. However, I also believe those who believe there was no fraud in the last election are naive.

Mail in ballots have opened a whole new door for corrupt elections. I personally know of six write in ballots sent to dead people, or people who left the state and registered to vote in another state during the last presidential election.

In this primary election, I know my deceased son received a write-in ballot. His 19-year-old grandson, who is severely handicap to a point that he cannot possibly vote, but was forced to register to vote when he was taken to the DMV to get the ID he needed for his social security benefits, received a write-in ballot. I met a person at the polls who has recently moved to Nevada and registered to vote here but received a write-in ballot from the state they moved from.

I am also sure none of these votes were cast but it makes one wonder how many such votes are cast.

Thought of the week… A fool and his money are soon elected.

  1. I am also a walker and someone who stayed in Logandale in 2020. I had many similar encounters like the stories you have written about during my own personal walks in Logandale, Overton and Moapa. On one occasion, I had an opportunity to meet a woman named Janet who introduced herself as I approached the Post Office in Logandale. Janet mentioned that Dr. Moses use to walk all the time in the area. So, I am glad to read that you are once again clocking some more miles in the community.

  2. Thankfully you are well enough to resume walking, if you begin at the crack of dawn you will finish before it is so hot. You could also do as I did when I was a groundskeeper at schools there, douse yourself with water. It always amazed me how warm water would cool me as it evaporated. I often quote you,” heat is uncomfortable but cold hurts.” I also thank you, Vee Wilson, and Grant Bowler that I could spend over seventeen years with CCSD. Because of that my retirement years are more comfortable. My wife, Mary and I miss our many friends in Moapa Valley and wish you all much happiness. I enjoy your weekly articles very much and hope they continue for many years.

  3. It makes me so happy to hear that your health is allowing you to get out and walk again although we will have to agree to disagree on the hot vs the cold. Your welcome of course to come walk with your fremily anytime up in the Rocky Mountains. Thanks as always for your writing and your insight. Miss you Doc!
