The notorious Pilates Reformer machines are coming to Mesquite! And fitness guru Donna Schorr, who is a certified Pilates Reformers instructor is ready and willing to help residents learn to use them safely.

The Mesquite Recreation Center is partnering up with Schorr to bring the Pilates machines to Mesquite.
Pilates has been around for over a hundred years. It was created by Joseph Pilates using hospital beds rigged with springs and straps to aid patients in ways not previously available.

“After teaching all manner of fitness classes since 1984, I came to Pilates to help me with injuries that wouldn’t seem to resolve themselves regardless of how much Yoga I did,” said Schorr. “I fell in love with the Reformer, and after taking classes as a student for several years, I decided to pursue my own education in order to teach.”

Schorr learned the Stott method, a very conservative discipline, where the focus is on rehab and corrective exercise. Schorr has a certificate for Mat, Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Reformers through Pacific NW Pilates. She has taught over 2,000 hours of yoga classes, over 1,000 hours of Spin, as well as Zumba, Boot Camp, and Les Mills Formats.

In order to fully understand how Schorr can help, residents can now schedule a postural analysis appointment with her. This can determine whether a person has any postural deviations, imbalances, muscle weaknesses, or any other faults in their movement patterns which could be causing pain or discomfort.

“Let’s see what your skeleton tells us!” instructed Schorr. “We’ll use your bony landmarks to identify areas of symmetry that can be addressed on the Reformer.”

In order to participate in the course residents must first take the “Intro to Pilates Reformers” seminar presented by Schorr. This seminar gives a better understanding of what Reformers are and how they can be incredibly beneficial.

After taking the seminar participants can then schedule a private one-on-one session with Schorr before taking her classes.

“We are very excited to have this new class being offered at our Jimmie Hughes Campus,” said Mesquite Recreation Manager Zach Robison. “Donna is an expert instructor, and she is incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to health and fitness. This class will benefit people in their daily lives immensely.”

The “Intro to Pilates Reformers” seminars will be held bi-monthly at the Mesquite Recreation Center. Schorr’s next seminar will be held on Thursday, June 30 from 12:00 – 1:15pm in the Mesquite Recreation Center Conference Room.
