“Your Favorite Song Title” was the theme for the Virgin Valley Artist Association( VVAA) June Art Competition. It was a sort of ‘Name that Tune’ with a picture game. Sixty artists joined the game naming their favorite tunes with a piece of art.

The awards ceremony, held on Thursday, June 16, drew quite a crowd. The theme was intriguing. Sadly, many of the award winners were not present at the reception. Could that mean “I am on Vacation” or “Summer Time Blues?”

VVAA President Dottie Golden explained that the VVAA allows mixed media in their competition because they use “How well the artist interprets the theme as their first criteria when judging.”
The Best of Show Award went to Floyd Johnson for his rendition of Duke Ellington’s Jubilee.
Johnson said, “I finally found a use for my old 78 rpm record.”

First place award went to Charyn McDonnell for the colorful “All My Relations”.

The Second Place award went to “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by Cheryl Sachse. This work also got the People’s Choice award.

Third Place went to Randy Bauman for “Bad Moon Rising.”
“Who does not know that song?” said Bauman

The Sponsors Choice Award went to Linda Harris for her beautiful watercolor of “Grandma’s Garden.”

The Mayor Choice Award also went to Cheryl Sachse for her detailed watercolor of “Tiny Dancer.”

The Emerging Artist of the month was Connie Keith for her “Purple People Eater” piece.
Honorable mention went to Rita Fulmer for “Stayin Alive;” Kathleen Birkholz for “100 pounds of Clay;” Chris Picior for “Joy to the World;” and Amy Wells for “American Pie.”

Everyone had a favorite tune to name even the City’s Executive Assistant Nancy Hewett who entered a piece for the first time. “Fly like an Eagle”

The July Competition themed exhibit will be “Let Your Dreams Fly.”
