New Overton Store offers “Deals for You!”

A new discount store opened in downtown Overton last week that promises a wide range of products. Deals for You, located at 145 S. Moapa Valley Blvd #3, opened on Friday, July 1, with a steady stream of curious shoppers stopping by throughout the day.

The 1,000 square foot store is owned and operated by Moapa Valley resident Amber Steen. Steen grew up in Las Vegas but has lived the last 13 years in Moapa Valley. While here she has run several other business ventures including a party bounce house rental company and a food truck called “Sweet Treats.”

Steen said that the purpose of the new store is to give local residents somewhere fun to go shopping.
“I just wanted to provided something that is accessible and affordable,” Steen said.
When asked what all she carries in her store, Steen responded that the answer is complicated. That is because merchandise in stock can change from week to week with all new items.

There was a lot of variety on the shelves on Friday afternoon. These included home decor, comforter sets, small furnishings, toys, kitchenware – everything from clocks to coffee makers.
“It might be easier if you say what you are looking for and I will tell you if I DON’T have it,” Steen said. “I probably will, though.”

Steen said that she especially wanted to be a resource for gift shoppers.
“It is difficult when kids are invited to a birthday party because it is hard to find good birthday presents without travelling somewhere else,” Steen said. “So I am always going to be focused on that. The same goes for things like baby showers.”

Steen said that she gets her merchandise by bidding on large lots of overstock or delayed merchandise from big box retailers.
“With all of the delays in shipping and supply chain problems, there is a lot of that stuff out there,” Steen said. “That means I can bid on it and sell it here at a very deep discount. Usually I am at least half price compared to top retail prices.”

Steen said that she was surprised at the strong customer response on the store’s first day. “I am shocked with how well it has gone,” she said. “I was pretty nervous this morning that no one would come. But it has been busy since the minute we opened the doors.”

Customers who came in that first day seemed pleased to have a new shopping option.
“This is the best thing that has happened in downtown Overton in a long time….and also the worst,” said shopper Heidi Crawford with a smile. “It is great for the women of the valley to be able to get out and do something now. But it’s not so great for the bank account. And I am guessing there will be a lot of angry husbands out there.”

Megan Canfield, who was also perusing the shelves in the store, said that it was good to have a local store providing such great deals on new products.

“With gas prices being what they are, leaving the valley for to find a little better deal on something just doesn’t make sense anymore,” Canfield said. “Any chance I can get to discount shop without leaving the valley, I take it.”

Steen admitted that the merchandise on the shelves right now offer a lot of variety. But she insisted that a lot more fun is still to come for the little shop.
“When things are really going to get fun is during the holidays,” Steen said. “I have a whole room of Christmas stuff. And I am really excited about putting out the Halloween costumes that I’ve got. It is going to be so much fun!”

On Friday, Steen said that she was still gauging shopping patterns at the store in order to determine the store hours. Thus, the regular hours had not been set yet. But she insisted that there would be regular hours posted at the store this week.
