WaFd Bank Kicks Off Summer Food Drive

By BOBBIE GREEN

The Progress

The local staff at Washington Federal Bank (WaFd) noticed a need in the community and have acted quickly to address it. The local branch has kicked off a Summer Food Drive to help restock the Salvation Army of Mesquite food pantry. The drive began on June 21 and will continue through August 31.
Branch staff are encouraging customers and residents of Mesquite to bring non-perishable food donations to help restock the Salvation Army food pantry.

The WaFd staff decided to hold this food drive after hearing that the Salvation Army has been getting low on food from Salvation Army director Bill Ennis. Ennis said that the food pantry gets a flood of donations during the holiday seasons. But the stores of food can get sparse at other times of year, especially during the summer.

But the demand for the food doesn’t go down much during those months. “We have actually had an increase of people in need!” Ennis said.

The kick-off for the food drive started on Tuesday morning, June 21 with an initial donation made by Carol Kolson, Mesquite Chamber of Commerce CEO. Kolson was there first to make her personal donation to the effort. She said that she hopes tha many others will do the same.
Food items most needed in the pantry are boxed mashed potatoes, pop-top canned foods, soups, pancake mix, syrups and pasta sauce.

Food can be dropped off at the WaFd Bank at 81 W. Mesquite Blvd. For additional information about the drive, call 702-346-5271.
