The Moapa Valley Library branch in Overton held its weekly LEGO Club on Thursday, July 7. The Club is part of the Library Summer Challenge 2022. Bins of LEGOs were provided for kids ages six and older so they could use their imaginations to build creative scenes.

LEGO Club is an hour-long activity which takes place each Thursday in the library’s Storytime Room. Five large bins of LEGOs were distributed around the room with standard building pieces. At the entrance, a table was set up with five smaller bins. These bins had more specialized pieces such as people, animals, gears, wheels, trees, flowers, trophies, doors, windows, and more.

About thirty kids came to participate in the Club last week. Upon arrival, they were directed to a cart with base plates of various sizes and colors. The kids were to choose a base plate and their creations had to stay within the parameters of the base plate. They could then find a place to sit on the floor and let their imaginations run wild. The kids gathered eagerly around the bins as the search began for the perfect pieces for their ideas.

The room was alive with excitement. Kids were hard at work building houses, castles, gardens, robots, cars, and more. Fingers raked through noisy LEGO bins and children were excited to explain what they were building with each other. Many parents got down on the floor with their kids to join in the fun.

Regular attendees were welcome to choose a card from the “LEGO Challenge” basket. These cards contained suggestions of things to build such as a self portrait, a musical instrument, something that can fly, and more.

As LEGO Club came to a close, the kids were told to write down their names and the name of their creation on a piece of paper. The projects were then placed in the display case at the front of the library for all to see until the next LEGO Club.

There are two remaining LEGO Club events this summer: July 21 and July 28 both at 11:30 a.m. Then there will be a break through August and LEGO Club will resume in September once each week in the evenings.
