New Snack Shop Wows Crowds In Mesquite

By JAIRO VALLEJO

The Progress

The newest addition to the great city of Mesquite, Xico Cream, has now been serving their delicious treats for several weeks. The newly sweet shop has gained popularity throughout the community and in the surrounding areas.

The Mesquite Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting event for Xico Cream on Friday, July 1.
Xico Cream (pronounced “hee-co”) is located at 330 Sandhill Blvd. near Smiths; between Cafe Rio and Leslie’s Pool Supplies. It is open on Wednesday – Sunday from noon to 9:00pm.

The shop offers a wide variety of authentic Mexican snacks. These include elotes (corn on the cob), crepes, chamangos (mango and chamoy dessert), milkshakes, gelato, raspados (shaved ice), and many other delicious options to satisfy your cravings. Inside the store has been decorated to produce the most pleasing aesthetic.
“It is great to see new business ventures come to Mesquite,” said Jacob Allen, a Xico Cream customer. “They have a wide-variety of awesome snacks that have probably never been sold in Mesquite.”

One of many delicious treats awaiting customers of the new Xico Cream shop in Mesquite.

Xico Cream owner Elizabeth Lara said that she is a daughter to two Mexican parents that immigrated to the U.S. in 1992.
“They chose Mesquite because they felt it was the safest place, and they also felt a sense of community here,” Lara said. “They got here with nothing on their back, all they had were aspirations and dreams: one being that they could give their two children a better future.”

Lara said that she was born in 1993 in Las Vegas. But she was raised in Mesquite.
“Just like any immigrant child, I wanted to make my parents’ sacrifices worth it,” Laura said. “So I set off to the big city to pursue my career in dentistry. I worked in dental for quite a bit, I loved every minute of it, but I couldn’t ignore that entrepreneurial side of me.”

Lara said that she used to sell candies and popsicles when she was younger. She remembers the feeling of excitement when she made her first 20 dollars. The idea of owning her own sweet shop started at that young age.
“I had the concept in my head for years, but I finally acted on it!” Lara said.

“And Xicocream was born! The named originated from a small city, were my mother was born, called Xicotencatl Tamaulipas, I thought it was a cute and short name, and it also pays homage to my parents for all their hard work and for allowing me to live my American dream.”
Xico Cream plans on bringing more snacks to their menu in the upcoming winter season.
