The Clark County Library Overton branch had it’s summer challenge finale on Wednesday, July 27. The event ended the reading challenge program that has gone on throughout the summer.

About 40 kids and their parents showed up for the fun-filled water day, which included water tables, sprinklers, water toys and popsicles to help everyone cool off.

Melissa Rebman was there with her three daughters, Lily, Izzy and Ellie Jo. Lily will begin 2nd grade next week and said she has been having fun reading this summer. “I am excited to come here today because the library is fun and I love to read,” Lily said.

Izzy is a kindergardner who also said that she likes reading a lot.

April Smulders attended water day with her daughter Liliana, 5.
“I love to come to the library and be on the computer and do puzzles,” Liliana said.
“We have been to every activity the library offered this summer and we read every day for 20-30 minutes,” her mom, April said.

Approximately 125 kids and 30 adults signed up this year for the Summer Reading Challenge at the Overton branch.

The popular program has brought larger crowds and fun activities in Moapa Valley throughout the summer.

“Although all Clark County libraries have a reading program, in Moapa Valley we like to make sure the events are really big and fun, especially the opening and closing days of the summer challenge,” said librarian Naomi Harris. “We have been doing the water day activity for over 10 years now. It is a favorite!”

Miss Naomi, as the kids call her, is now hanging up her reading glasses, so to speak. She is moving out of the Moapa Valley so will no longer be working at the library.

“I have been here almost 15 years,” she said. “I have loved every minute of it, and I will surely miss the kids a lot!”
