Alonzo Handy III

Alonzo Handy III

Alonzo Hazelton Handy III of Mesquite, NV passed away on August 3, 2022, just over a month shy of his 84th birthday. He was at home surrounded by family when he died. “Lonny,” as he was called growing up, was born in Preston, ID to Alonzo and Dorothy. He married Carolyn on a snowy Thanksgiving Day in 1961, nearly 62 years age.

“Al,” as he was later known, was an avid baseball fan (a hobby he passed on to his son), coin collector, reader, bird watcher (a hobby he passed on to his daughter) and enjoyed gardening.

After graduating with a B.S. in Chemistry from Utah State University, Al and Carolyn moved to Salt Lake City where Al started working for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as a hydrologist and water quality specialist. He stayed with the USGS until he retired in 1993. The job moved the family every 3-4 years eastward to Georgia, Virginia, Michigan, Saudi Arabia, and Colorado. After retirement, Al and Carolyn moved to Utah to care for their parents. Eight years later they settled in Mesquite.

Al was an intelligent and quiet man with a broad sense of humor and easy laugh, and a dutiful husband, father, and pet owner.

He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a member of the 8th Retirement Branch.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn; son Allen (Amber) and daughter Kristina (Melissa); brother Roger (Annette); aunt Carol; granddaughters: Courtney, Amy, Indiana, Sophia, Natasha, Kiara; and great grandchildren: Ira, Jasper, and Scarlett; and his cat Lily.

A visitation will be held on Friday, August 12, 2022, from 6 to 8 pm at Virgin Valley Mortuary (320 East Old Mill Road | Mesquite, NV 89027, and again on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at the LDS Stake Center (100 N Arrowhead Ln, Mesquite, NV 89027) from 10:00am – 10:45am, with the funeral service starting at 11:00am in the Chapel. Directly after the funeral, burial will take place at the Old Mesquite City Cemetery.

Family and friends can sign an online memorial guestbook at www.virginvalleymortuary.com, and/or in person at the viewings.
