Mesquite Lion’s Club Holds First Meeting

By VERNON ROBISON

The Progress

Lion’s Club representatives from Las Vegas visited the Mesquite community in efforts to start a new Lion’s Club in Mesquite. Pictured front row l to r Yvonne McCully, Marie Stamatolates, Ann Misner, Arlene Stevens. Back row Robert McCully, Kelvin Moniz, Kimo Harward and Scott Stevens.

A new Lion’s Club chapter is being formed in the Mesquite community. A group of Lion’s Club members from the Las Vegas Aloha Lion’s Club held a meeting at the Mesquite Library branch on Saturday, Aug. 6 to put out information about the new chapter and to build support for a new club here.

“I was very happy with the attendance in Mesquite,” said Kimo Harward District Governor of Lions District 46. “We had 23 people in attendance and some of them signed up on the spot. Others we expect to sign up in the next couple of weeks.”

Harward said that, based on response thus far, he anticipates a fully functional club chapter to be organized and in operation within the next two months or so. It will be the first time that the city has an operating Lion’s Club in quite a few years now, he said.
“We talked for a bit about how the organization chart works and how the local board is put together,” said Harward. “People seemed pretty interested and enthusiastic about it.”

Lion’s Club Region Chair Yvonne McCully talks about the Lion’s Club to a group of local residents at a meeting held in the Mesquite Library branch last week. The Club will hold its second local meeting on Saturday morning this week at 10 am in the Veterans Center.

Several of the attendees were relatively new to the community but were familiar with the Lion’s Club in other locations, according to Harward. “They were eager to join, be a part again and be of service to their community.”

Others were people less familiar with Lions but who were curious about the organization, what it does and how they could be involved.
“The Lions is an international organization,” Harward said. “It has been around for 104 years and 1.4 million members worldwide. So when people say they have never heard of it, I am always a bit surprised. But there are a lot of those.”

Harward explained that the Lions is a global network of volunteers who work together to make a difference. Members have a desire to take action and serve others, he added.

The club has several important global causes. These include reducing the prevalence of diabetes, preventing avoidable blindness, addressing hunger in the world, restoring the environment and supporting families affected by childhood cancer.

But the clubs also set goals and objectives on ways that they can address local problems and challenges in their own communities.

The group will be coming back to Mesquite for another meeting this weekend. On Saturday, Aug. 13, 10 am at the Mesquite Veterans Center, they will hold their next meeting. All are welcome to attend and learn about the Lion’s Club organization and how to get involved in making the community a better place.

The Mesquite Veterans Center is located at 840 E. Hafen Lane.

  1. I would love to know more and attend the next meeting. I didn’t find out until after the fact that there was a meeting today.
