Members of the Rotary Club of Mesquite heard about upcoming plans for the Virgin Valley 4-H club. 4-H club coordinator Rocki Shaner spoke to the Rotarians on Tuesday, Aug. 2 about all 4-H Club programs open again after a pause due to COVID.

Shaner described some of the groups already formed within the local club. A shooting and sports group was one of those. But there is groups for hiking, fishing, and other outdoor activities.

Another group, called the Knuckle Garden Club is focused on growing hydroponic plants. And one group manages a row in the Mesquite Public Garden.
“Right now we have weekly meetings at the STEAM center for homeschool groups on Tuesdays,” Shaner said. “We hope to get an afterschool meeting going soon at the STEAM Center.”

Shaner explained that the group was not yet allowed to meet in Mesquite school rooms. “Presently we can go to Beaver Dam School, but we are not yet allowed back into Clark County School District facilities,” she said.

Shaner talked about how, during the COVID hiatus, she made short videos about ranching and farming with her own family working on their ranch for the 4-H Club. The videos were titled “Day in the Life of Rancher” and were instructive. They were posted online at YouTube and received the most views for 4-H in the state of Nevada.

The discussion at the local meeting included a possible partnership developing between the Beaver Dam 4-H Clubs and the Mesquite Rotary Club.

The 4-H offices are located in the Mesquite Campus of the College of Southern Nevada. Their building is located next to the Sunshine Academy.

Shaner said that 4-H is planning to hold an open house in October to enroll new student members ages 5-18.
Also needed are adult leaders to help the program and form new interest groups, she said.
