Splashing into the new school year, Virgin Valley High School students partied like rockstars at the Mesquite Rec Center for the annual opening social! The heavy clouds above did not deter the faithful Bulldogs as students funneled into the pool.

The first day of school assembly kickstarted back to school. The freshmen marched into the assembly ready to start the best four years of their lives.

Ashlyn Jackson, a new freshman at Virgin Valley, said, “I’m super excited for high school and for the fall sports season! Volleyball season is just starting and I’m pumped! Football season is also exciting!”
Jackson isn’t the only one excited for Friday night lights to begin. The Bulldog football team hosted a scrimmage against Sunrise Mountain on Friday night before the social.

Kicking off the Bulldog social, DJ Boogie Man and DJ Code One got the crowd rocking with their entertaining music and energetic personalities. The Dawgs grooved to “Shake it Off” and other classic hits.

Upon entrance, each student in attendance received a raffle ticket. Throughout the night, DJ Boogie Man announced winners of the raffle. The Bulldogs cheered as ten of their classmates were able to claim their giftcard prizes.

The DJ’s had a plethora of fun activities and beats. But what really took the cake was the first annual belly flop competition. Competitors lined up at the end of the daunting diving board to show off their flops while the fainthearted cheered them on from a safe distance.

One of the first brave competitors, Aiden Muniz, a small but mighty incoming freshman, stepped up to the board, hyping up the crowd with big dreams of being named the first Virgin Valley belly flop champion. Hitting the end of the board, he launched himself into the air and completed a one and a quarter massive belly flop, astonishing the crowd with jeers and cheers. This encouraged the rest of the contenders to step up their game.

Flop after flop excited and entertained the crowd chanting, “Belly-Flop! Belly-Flop!”

Championship round, Mason Montoya approaches the board with his final flop of the evening. With the crowd’s anticipation thick enough to cut with a knife, Montoya hurls himself high in the air into a stunning gainer belly flop. The crowd erupted, launching Montoya into legendary status. DJ Boogie Man pronounced Montoya the Belly Flop Champion on the spot.

When the Champion was asked how he mustered up the courage, he commented, “It’s full send or no send.” And boy did he send it!

Virgin Valley Student Council would like to thank the City of Mesquite for the amazing facility and accommodations, the administration and chaperones at Virgin Valley High School, and Groove Factor Events for bringing the party with their two amazing DJs.

Student council is also excited for their upcoming events and hopes to continue having the great Virgin Valley community support!
