Annual 9/11 Memorial Walk To Be Held Sunday

The Moapa Valley Fire District (MVFD) will host the 4th annual Moapa Valley Patriot Day Memorial Walk on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 pm.

MVFD Captain Blake Empey said that this event will have a similar route as last year’s walk. Participants will meet in the Overton Community Center east parking lot next to MVFD station #74. All of the public is invited.

The walk will start in front of the Overton Library branch. From there, participants will continue 2,977 steps, one step for each of the lives lost that day. The procession will stop every so often to pay tribute to all of the entities that responded to the event as well as to those who lost their lives on that tragic day in 2001.

The walk will have a representative of each of the first responders and military carrying the flags for each department or branch.

Led by firefighters in full turnout gear, the walkers will stop at 343 steps to take a moment to honor the 343 firefighters. Then 72 more steps for law enforcement members, and 8 for Emergency Medical Services. Then the rest of the steps for all of the civilians.

Everyone is encouraged to wear red, white and blue and to bring an American flag. After the walk there will be a memorial video played outside of Station 74.

“This is a somber but a patriotic event that we hope will bring pride to our community,” said Empey. “It is an honor once again for the MVFD to participate and pay tribute to our fallen brothers and sisters, including Fire, EMS, Military, Police and civilians.”
