OPEN FORUM: Hand slapped for spreading good news

By BOBBIE GREEN

About a week ago, I looked at my hand and found that I was missing my wedding ring. How can that be? I didn’t know how, where or when it came off.
I quickly back-tracked everywhere I had been that morning. No luck.

As a last resort, I put my loss announcement on social media. I posted it to community pages on Facebook and Next Door. While I received many responses from caring people, there was no one who had found the ring.

Four days later, I received a phone call, with a very excited lady on the line saying she had my ring! It was Darlene Montague at College of Southern Nevada, Mesquite Campus.

An employee there had found the rings Monday evening as he was cleaning the room. I had been CSN to a meeting of the Sunrise Rotary Club on Thursday morning. Darlene knew I had been to the meeting and she had seen my description of the rings on the internet. She said, “I just knew they were your rings when our employee turned them in.”

Darlene said there had been two classes held in that room since Thursday morning, but no one had seen the rings previously.
Lucky for me the wonderful person who did find them was an honest person and turned them in.

I was so happy I ran over to get my rings. The person who found them was not there to thank. So I posted an announcement to the same social media sites so everyone would know my happy news.

This is what I posted: Wedding Ring Found! Thank God and all you lovely people who cared about my loss. We are all so lucky to live in such a nice town full of nice, caring people. Hero of the Day is ADAM HILKER he found my wedding rings in room 8 of CSN. The honest young man turned in the ring to administration…I hope to meet Adam when he comes to work, for a grateful thank you and promised reward.

The next day I went to the college to meet Adam and give him a hug and thanked him.

But imagine my surprise when I got a message from Facebook informing me that I had not followed their rules and warning me sternly that, if I did it again, they would take me off. Hmm!

I also got a notice from one of the Facebook groups saying they had taken down my notice because I did not follow rules of the group.

No one mentioned what rule I broke. So, I am left to wonder. Putting it on the internet helped me to get my rings back, if it had not been there, no one would have known who the rings belonged to. This is a good use of the internet.

So what was the problem? Was I wrong to mention the name of the good guy who returned the rings? Was it wrong to mention something good about someone instead of bad-mouthing someone? Was it the fact that I thanked God? Have we Americans really fallen so low that we can’t mention God on the internet? I find that hard to believe.

So, I am left to wonder…
