Perkins Field Flying Club is hosting its second Airport Open House on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 8:30 am-2:00 pm at Perkins Field Airport in Overton. There will be plenty for community members to do. Perhaps most exciting is a free flight above Moapa Valley for kids.
“Similar to last year’s event, we have partnered with the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1300 out of Henderson, to offer youth ages 8-17 a free, Young Eagles airplane ride,” said Tim DeBerardinis, charter club member.
In addition, there will be a static, model rocket display from members of the Tripoli Vegas – Rocketry Club. They’ll be there with several rockets of various sizes; including rocket engines.
Glider pilot Dave, a member of the Las Vegas Valley Soaring Association, will be in attendance. Dave with his ASG 29, 18-meter glider on display. Come out and visit Dave to find out what it takes to soar from Nephi, Utah to Jean, Nevada merely gliding along mountain tops and below cloud layers.
Returning this year is Taz; retired USAF Combat pilot. He displayed his Aerostar YAK-52 at last year’s open house. Can’t wait to see what he flies out this year!
Joining in again will be: Air Methods Mercy Air medical helicopter; LVMPD Air Support Unit helicopter; LVMPD NE Resident Section officers; Nevada Highway Patrol; and Moapa Valley Fire District (MVFD).
Last year the volunteer pilots flew 150 kids using 16 airplanes; 30 more kids than had been preregistered. The event is on track to meet or exceed that number this year based on the current preregistration numbers, DeBerardinis said.
The Young Eagles preregistration check in will begin at 8:30 am.
“We will do all we can for walk-up registrations the day of the open house but preregistration is strongly recommended,” DeBerardinis said.
