Gearing Up For MVHS Homecoming

By CORINNE MESSER

The Progress

Camille and Rod Leavitt will be honored as the Grand Marshalls of the 2022 MVHS Homecoming Parade next week.

The Moapa Valley High School 2022 Homecoming week is just around the corner! And preparations are being made.

Two Grand Marshals have been selected to lead this year’s Homecoming Parade. They are distinguished MVHS alumni Rod and Camille Leavitt.
“Rod and Camille were chosen because they truly bleed blue and gold,” said MVHS principal Hal Mortensen. “They are life-long residents of Moapa Valley and attended school from kindergarten to graduation. When you look in the bleachers, you will often find them in the stands cheering for the Pirates. They are strong supporters of the programs at Moapa Valley High School and they are always one phone call away to assist when needed.”

Rod graduated in 1978 from MVHS. He was active in football, basketball and baseball. He was a member of the 1975 and 1977 state championship football teams, and a member of the 1977 state championship baseball team.

Camille graduated in 1979 from MVHS. She was a cheerleader and was active in music and in student council. She was also homecoming queen her senior year.

When the Leavitts married, they settled in Moapa Valley and raised their three sons: Tyson, Trent, Taylor and a daughter, Taryn. They too are graduates of MVHS and have also chosen to raise their families here in the valley.

The Leavitts have eleven grandchildren who attend local schools. Three granddaughters attend MVHS this year and are on the Pirate Motion dance team: Lucy, Abby and Evelyn.

Blue and gold runs deep in their family. When their oldest grandchild, Lucy graduates this spring, she will be the fifth generation in their family to graduate from MVHS. It all began 100 years ago with Camille’s grandmother, Bertha Shurtliff who graduated in 1923!

Rod and Camille are the owners of Wheeler’s Electric, a local electrical contracting business.
They love this valley and the experiences they had at MVHS, and are proud to be Pirates!

Homecoming week will have the following community activities:
Tuesday, Oct. 4: Powder Puff Football on the football field at 6:30pm
Wednesday, Oct. 5: Homecoming Parade at 5pm with Community Homecoming Assembly to follow on the football field.
Friday, Oct. 7: Homecoming Game with pre-game festivities starting at 6:30 pm and Varsity Football game against Western at 7pm
Saturday, Oct. 8: Homecoming Dance 7-10pm at MVHS.

There will be a kick off assembly on Friday, September 30th in the new gym at 12:45pm announcing the homecoming princesses.

The Homecoming King candidates this year are Joseph Barnes, Jayden Bunker and Landon Wrzensinski. The queen candidates are Jorja Freeman, Sage Overson and Miriam Werner.
