The Progress
The Mesquite Rotary Club hosted a pizza lunch at Beaver Dam High School (BDHS) on Monday, Sept. 26. The lunch was to welcome the seven new inductees of the school’s Interact Club. With these new members, the club now has a total membership of 13.
“The school and Rotary have a long student relationship and we have a strong Interact Club,” said BDHS Principal Darlene McCulley. “The club members are also our student leaders.”
There were lots of smiles and plenty of empty pizza boxes about at the event. Five members of Rotary Club of Mesquite were present for the induction.
Interact Advisor Deb Schmersal said that she was thrilled to be gaining the new members.
The new officers for the year were recognized at the meeting. These included Emma Gonzales, Evelyn Hermosillo, Zittlays GOnzales and Simena Gutierrez.
The new club members were also inducted by the Interact President and the club advisor, stating the Rotary mottos “Is it the Truth” and “Service above Self.”
The Interact Club participates in local community and Rotary functions. So far this year Interact members have served as volunteers for Rotary Mudd Volleyball and have participated in Beaver Dam Clean-up Day where they painted over graffiti.
Interact Clubs are challenged by Rotary to participate in one international project and one school/community project per school year. The students decide as a group which projects they want to get involved in. Local Rotarians also volunteer to go along and help with the project as well.
“One of the choices this year was the Corazon’s ‘Build a House in a Day’ program,” explained Schmersal. “They seem excited about the opportunity of traveling to Tijuana or Tecate, Mexico and helping to build a house for a needy family there. I think this would be a life changing experience for all of us.”
For their local project, the Interact Club kids are discussing the possibility of sponsoring a food drive to benefit a local food pantry this fall for the Families of Beaver Dam and Littlefield.
