Volunteers Needed To Help ‘Green Up’ Warm Springs

The Warm Springs Natural Area (WSNA) is calling for local volunteers to help in a “green up” project. The project will take place in a behind-the-scenes area of the WSNA that the public rarely sees.

The Green Up event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 9 am to 12 pm. SNWA, the owner of the Natural Area property, will even be providing lunch at noon for the volunteer group from White Boy’s Taco truck which will be on hand.

The volunteer crew will spend a couple of hours planting native vegetation in an old abandoned farm field on the Natural Area, according to SNWA Restoration Ecologist Von Winkel.

“The field has reverted to just bare ground now,” Winkel said. “So we will be installing a couple thousand native plants in that field. These are plants that would have been found in this area 200 years ago and more.”

Moapa Valley residents have been instrumental over the years in helping out with the reclamation of natural habitat at WSNA. There have been nearly 90 Eagle Scout projects done at the WSNA. At least half of those were completed by local kids, Winkel said.

“For ten years now, this community has come out to support those boys and us in these efforts,” Winkel said. “We are very grateful for that.”

The Green Up and free lunch aren’t the only activities being offered that day at WSNA. Volunteers could also stick around and enjoy a free 2-hour guided walking tour of the WSNA property which will take place from 1:30 -3:30 pm.

To register for either or both of these events scan the QR code(s) on the WSNA ads located on pages 10A and 11A of this edition. The QR codes will also provide directions on how to get to the correct locations.
