Candidates Visit With Voters At MRW Event

The First Baptist Church in Mesquite was busy on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 15, as the venue for the Mesquite Republican Women’s Club Candidates Meet & Greet event. If the candidates were not enough draw, the aroma from all of the enticing food prepared by the MRW ladies said, “Come on in!”

The lobby had candidate tables for one-on-one talks and information. The enticing food was set out by the coffee bar.

Sam Peters running  for U.S. Congress, District 4, talked about the problems in the runaway federal deficit and the Congress never passing a budget. He also decried the nation’s open border. These issues are all important problems to him that need fixing.

“I am already working with other legislators to get bills ready for when I get elected,” Peters said.
He reminded the mainly GOP crowd that his opponent Steven Horsford backs President Biden’s liberal agenda.

Michele Fiore who is running for State Treasurer spoke about the “fake news media” that won’t print real news about the Democrats. “They won’t tell you that Sisolak just lost the teacher’s union endorsement, for example,” Fiore said.
Fiore said that she is worried about where our tax money is going. She said that she wants to see an audit take place as soon as she is elected.

Lieutenant Governor candidate Stavros Anthony talked about two roles of this office is small business advocacy and Homeland Security.
“Supporting small business means reducing taxes, license fees, and regulations,” Anthony said.

On security, Anthony reminded attendees that he has 29 years of experience in law enforcement and will travel to meet with all state law enforcement agencies. He said that he plans to work with Joe Lombardo as the new governor after the election.

John Evans running for County Recorder said that all Nevada homes are at risk of title fraud. But more so in Clark County.
“That is because our current county recorder does not make available online access to check on your property title,” Evans said. “The rules and regulation give the county recorder the tools to do that. But currently Clark County chooses not to use that tool. One must physically go into the office to obtain that information. All other 16 counties in Nevada allows you can do it on line. I will make online possible when I am elected.”

Patsy Brown, running for Public Administrator, gave the audience some advice on little known ways to ensure that one’s estate wishes are carried out after a person passes away. She said that people should have their life insurance policy included in their trust. In addition a full copy of the policy documents should be filed with the trust and recorded. Brown wants to make sure people have proper information for their protection.

An energetic Thaddeus” Toby” Yurek running for Assembly, District 19 reiterated how we need to get common sense back in government and fixing our poor education system. He feels there is a strong possibility that Republicans can get control of the state government in the upcoming election. But people need to get out and vote.

Jeff Stone, running for State Senate District 20, informed the audience of his conservative background. He urged people to visit his campaign website and look at his “Contract with Nevadans” which openly declare his legislative priorities. The site is at www.stoneforsenate.com

Stone said he wants to bring better medical care to the state. He also gave his promise he will not vote to raise taxes. He said he wants a cap placed on current property taxes.

Mesquite City Council candidates who were present to speak were Patti Gallo and Paul Wanlass. There was also a representative speaking for Karen Fielding who was unable to attend.
U.S. Senate candidate Adam Laxalt had a table and a representative at the event.
