Moapa Valley Fire District (MVFD) served up breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 15, to residents of the community. The breakfast celebrated the ending of Fire Prevention Week in the community.

Local residents enjoyed pancakes, eggs, sausage and orange juice as they visited with MVFD members and volunteers to learn about fire prevention. A bounce house was on site for the kids to enjoy.

As MVFD Chief Stephen Neel was cooking up some pancakes, he said the purpose of the week’s events was awareness and preparation.
“We recommend a family plan to escape a fire, with a meeting point so everyone can be accounted for in that situation,” Neel said. “The better you prepare, the better the outcome in a fire emergency.”

In the firehouse, a recruitment video and slide show presentation was playing, showing pictures taken throughout the year to get the community excited about recruiting.

Overton residents Carol and Don Vick attended the breakfast and enjoyed speaking with some of the MVFD members.
“Everyone should thank their stars for the MVFD and all the volunteers, because we’d be in a world of hurt without them,” Carol said.

“When there is something happening in the valley, it is good to be a part of it,” said Overton resident Clint Brill. “They (MVFD) don’t mind facing the heat so we can stay cool.”

When asked about tips to make it easier for the fire department to access your home and put out fires, Chief Neel responded with, “It helps if we have the correct address; there should be a clear path around the house; there should be no burnable brush around the property or vehicles, no fuel storage, remove junk around the house, and make sure the fire hydrant is clearly visible.”

He concluded by stating, “We hope to promote awareness and safety as often as we can to protect both citizens and fire district personnel.”

This was the the 1st annual community breakfast as the MVFD plans to make it bigger and better next year to promote fire safety and prevention.
