Mesquite Fire and Rescue is continuing its tradition of supporting Mesquites own Cancer HELP Society during October: Cancer Awareness Month.
The firefighters have been passing around the boot in front of the local Smith’s and Walmart stores, asking for donations to the Cancer Help Society.
On Friday, Oct. 21, firefighters brought a rescue gurney instead of a boot. The gurney was piled high with t-shirrts of all sizes. The t-shirts were available to donors for a $20 donation to the Help Society.
Fire Department spokesman, Capt. Spencer Lewis said, “We chose to support our local cancer society because we wanted our collected funds to stay in our community.”
The Progress talked with firefighter Robert Ceja, while he was taking donations at Smith Market on Friday.
“We are proud to do this and help people in our community,” Ceja said.
Firefighters will be at the supermarket doors one more time this week on Friday, October 28 taking donations.
