A Mayoral proclamation named last week as “Red Ribbon Week” in Mesquite for the Elk’s Drug Awareness Program. Mesquite Mayor Al Litman read the proclamation in the City Council meeting held on Tuesday, Oct. 24 and presented the document to about two dozen Mesquite Elks Lodge members in attendance.
As a nation-wide organization, the Elks have an ongoing project to raise awareness of how alcohol and drug abuse affect individuals and families in the community.
Members of the local Elks Lodge go to local schools each year to make presentations and educate children about the dangers of drug abuse.
The proclamation stated that Red Ribbon Week “offers citizens the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to drug-free lifestyles.”
Members of the community were encouraged to wear a red ribbon and participate in drug prevention activity to show that commitment.
“I encourage you to participate in drug prevention education activities, not only during Red Ribbon Week but also throughout the year,” Litman said.
