VVHS Students Celebrate Sadie’s Week

The Progress

VVHS students l to r Ben Nelson, Drake Wakefield, and Kenny Richmond participate in VVHS’s Sadie’s dress up week: “BBQ Dads vs Soccer Moms”

Virgin Valley High School continued its annual tradition of a Sadie Hawkins dance paired with the week-long “Turkey Olympics” event on November 14-19.

Sadies Hawkins is a girls-ask dance where the ladies ask a fella and match outfits for the day. The traditional Turkey Olympics is a “class war” between each grade ending Friday afternoon with an assembly. The theme for this year’s festive week was “This or That” where students could choose what to dress for in a versus manner.

The dress-up days offered the students a choice of what to dress up for everyday. Monday started things off right with a “Country or Country Club” theme. Students could choose to either dust off their cowboy boots, throw on a cowboy hat, or dress in a preppy, rich kid outfit.

Tuesday’s theme was “Movie Night In or Movie Premiere.” This day allowed students to choose between a classic pajama day-ready for an at-home movie- or dressing to the nines in a look worthy enough for the red carpet.

Wednesday’s dress-up theme was “Bikers or Surfers.” This day had students repping their leather jackets or pulling out leis and floral prints to dress on theme.

Thursday was a “Barbeque Dads or Soccer Moms” dress up. Students came in aprons and crocs holding kitchen utensils or in oversized shades with a ponytail and a bag of orange slices.

Friday was the only day that wasn’t a “This or That” themed day. It split each grade up by bulldog colors: the seniors wore green, the juniors wore black, the sophomores wore white, and the freshmen repped grey.

The Virgin Valley High School staff and student council also hosted a few events during Sadie’s week.

The sophomore class student council organized a basketball tournament. Destry Tobler, Max Hughes, Brayden Taylor, Nathaniel P, Bryant Denningoff, Karter Richmond dominated, and their sophomore team “Kool Aid” was crowned reigning champs.

The junior class student council planned a movie night on Tuesday. The movie shown, a classic and my personal favorite, was “Shrek.” The concessions stand sold Shrek related items. The biggest hit there was the waffles, paying ode to the famous Donkey quote “In the mornin’, I’m havin’ waffles!” The high school students enjoyed the waffles, sipping on hot chocolate, and hanging out with friends.

The Turkey Olympic’s aspect of the week reached a peak with the Turkey Olympic’s assembly on Friday afternoon. It started with the announcement of food drive standings. The first-place grade was the sophomores, quickly followed by the senior class. The sophomores were awarded two points and the seniors one. Then the assembly was on!

Each grade sent representatives to compete in each activity. The competitions started with a rock paper scissors showdown that included a race jumping through hula hoops.

The next event was an old tradition returned called “Turkey legs.” One member from each class would stick their legs through a garbage bag and use the rest of the bag to cover their body and face so that only the legs showed. The competitors then competed in a leg flex-off that was judged by three teachers. The representative from the junior class, Kurt Felix, was eating up cheers from his grade’s section as he power-stomped and flexed. The judges deliberated and determined the small-but-mighty freshmen class to be the winners.

Senior competitor Aidan Litzenberger exclaimed that the competition “was rigged.” The crowd agreed with Litzenberger as the upperclassmen booed the guest judges off of the gym floor.

The next assembly game was a childhood classic: “Hungry Hungry Hippos”. For this game, each class sent three people: one to ride on a scooter and gather the balloon with a laundry basket and two to push the “hippo” out and pull them back in. The juniors dominated this event and scored their first and only point.

The assembly finished with the famous “Turkey Bowling” where each competitor bowls a frozen turkey while Wii bowling music played in the background. The freshmen, sophomore, and senior class went into this event all tied up, meaning winner takes all.

The freshmen and seniors both threw perfect strikes, meaning it was all up to style points to pronounce the winner. Tyler Black, the senior class turkey-bowler, had outstanding form and finesse, allowing the seniors to secure their title as Turkey Olympic champions!

The Sadie Hawkins dance took place on Saturday, organized by student body secretary Celina Top and the Sadies committee.
“Sadie’s Week was super fun to plan, from the dress up days to the dance!” Top said. “It was a little stressful, but definitely worth it!” The dance was a huge success and the music had everyone groovin’ on the dance floor.

The VVHS Student Council would like to thank the administration at the school for allowing and assisting with all the activities. They would also like to thank all the teachers that dressed up and chaperoned the events.
