A fire destroyed a home in Logandale in the early morning hours of Thursday, Dec. 2. According to Moapa Valley Fire District (MVFD) officials the fire started in a detached garage and quickly spread to the double-wide mobile home which was located nearby. The home was located on Pinwheel off of the north end of Skyline Rd. in Logandale.

The family of Gilbert and Andrea Torres, who lived in the home, all got out safely despite the total loss to the structures. This included parents, three children and pets.

“One of the homeowners said that they woke up at 1 am and felt like something was wrong,” said MVFD Chief Stephen Neel. “They got up and looked out a window and they said it looked like daylight out in the front yard. Further investigation revealed that the garage building was fully involved in flames.”

Neel said that the district received an alarm at 1:15 am and rushed to the scene with a full response including a total of 15 firefighters with equipment from MVFD Stations #72 (Moapa), #73 (Logandale) and #74 (Overton).

Everyone was out of the house by the time firefighters got on scene. But the garage, which was a metal building, had already been destroyed in the blaze along with several vehicles inside. The cause of the fire could not be determined, Neel said.

The fire had quickly spread to the home where it caused a total loss, Neel added.
The blaze was knocked down quickly after firefighters arrived. But it took several hours of monitoring the site to ensure that all sparks and hot spots had been extinguished, Neel said.
“It wasn’t until about 4:30 am when we all could leave the site,” he said.

The Torres’ friends and family have begun a community effort to provide the necessities to the family members until they can get back on their feet. Within a day, this effort had received ample donations of clothing and other necessary supplies to take care of the family’s needs in the short term.

In addition, a fundraiser was organized on GoFundMe.com and launched the very next day. By Saturday evening, that fundraiser had already raised more than $3,000 of a $5,000 goal.
