LETTER: Voting by conscience or from pocketbook?

Not everyone enjoys or is interested in politics, but given the number of retirees in the Moapa and Virgin Valleys, I would imagine there is significantly more concern than in a population with a more evenly distributed demographic.

The recent election process for Speaker of the House must have been interesting, irritating, infuriating, fascinating, or possessed of any number of other descriptions based on individual perspectives, but everyone has their own takeaways.

One of mine was how similar both parties operate. Sure, there are differences in the specifics of what the respective platforms will be, but the desire for influence and power runs deep in both parties. Nancy Pelosi was Speaker in the Democratic Congress because she was a prolific fund raiser and had the ability to inject that election altering cash into various members campaigns. Kevin McCarthy is the most prolific fund raiser on the Republican side and was elected for the same reason. Despite their differences, neither are stringent idealogues. My concern with this scenario is that when you’re a prolific fund raiser, you owe something to those who give you money, and those that you distribute that money to, owe you something. That means that you may frequently have to vote against the best interests of your constituents or your own personal morality.

There are Democrat and Republican Congressmen in the vast majority of States, yet they vote almost exclusively in contrast with each other. Do they do that because they really believe in their positions or is it because of their indebtedness to the leadership and other donors. Both parties have made some horrible decisions in the quest to satisfy the desires of their donors. I don’t know what the answer is, although I do know it revolves around money. Donor politics is the worst form of Government and it’s a horrible way to operate. Unfortunately, it’s how people operate.
