A “We Love Mesquite” art competition exhibit is being held at the Mesquite Fine Arts Center through the month of February. On Saturday, Feb. 18, winners of the competition were announced at an afternoon outdoor gala.

The event featured food, wine, beverages and song for the crowd. Music was provided by local band Mesquite Cafe Blues Band, including dynamic singing duo Linda and Paul Villanueva, and also features Wayne Andreola on the harmonica.

The “We Love Mesquite” competition was held in place of last year’s Mesquite Poster contest. The artists tried to capture what it is they love most about Mesquite in artwork entires to this mixed media competition. The competition exhibit was sponsored by Bill Mitchell, Farmers Insurance Agency.

While the attendees were eating and drinking at the tables arranged around the outdoor pavilion, VVAA Board Member Dottie Golden announced the winners.

First place went to Randy Bauman for his eye-catching digital art piece “Community Kaleidoscope.” Bauman was happy to explain his techniques to interested admirers.

Second place went to Floyd Johnson for his “End of the Day.” This was an acrylic that depicted iconic staples, like rocks and palm trees in Mesquite, and its dramatic sky “End of the Day” scenes.

Third place went to Amy Wells for her “Mesquite Flora” in ink and color pencil. Wells depicted the natural landscape of the desert town.

“The Virgin Valley Artist Association and the Mesquite Fine Arts Center is here for the community,” said Golden. “We promote the community and everyone in it is welcome here.”

“Entering our art competitions is not just for the experienced artist,” Golden added. “We want the new artists to come and grow with us.”
