VVHS Holds Annual Cupid Olympics Week

By TYRA LUDVIGSON

The Progress

During the annual VVHS Cupid Olympics last week, students named Brooke Talau (left) as Ms. Casanova and Abe (right) as Mr. Casanova.

Virgin Valley High School continued its long-lasting tradition of Cupid Olympics last week! This annual activity takes place each year during the week of Valentine’s Day. The week was filled with dress-up days, sporting events, and the classic Pink vs Blue assembly to wrap up the week on Friday.
Monday kicked off Cupid Olympics week with an “Anti-Valentine’s Day” where students and staff opted to wear their pajamas.

On Tuesday, which of course, was actually Valentine’s day, the school featured a “Red-Out” theme. The hallways were filled with red Valentine balloons and flowers.

Wednesday was “Ms. Casanova” day. Rather than dressing up, students competed against each other. All boys were given a paper heart necklace and would have to give it to whichever girl they talked to. The girl who collects the most hearts is deemed the winner and “Ms. Casanova.” This year’s Ms. Casanova was Brook Talau! Talau collected an astounding ten hearts throughout the day, blowing everyone else clear out of the water.
“I can’t believe I won!” Talau kept repeating as she claimed her gift card prize.

On Thursday the roles reversed for a “Mr. Casanova” contest. The girls were now giving their hearts to the boys. This year’s Mr. Casanova went to Abe with seven hearts.

Friday was the peak of Cupid Olympics week with a “Pink vs Blue Out” and morning assembly. The assembly started off with a classic PVC game where students hold up a PVC pipe in a circle and listen for directions on whether to go left or right. They then left their pole and made a mad dash for the pole from the person on either their right or left. The pink team took a “W” in this game, earning them an early lead against the blue team.

The teams then competed in a balloon pop race where a pair has to pop a balloon between themselves three times. Leo Calleros and Isaac Flores easily beat all the other teams–tying up the score.

The next event was a dance telephone, played like traditional telephone where you whisper a phrase down a line of people, only with dancing! While the blue team was grooving, the pink team took it with their slick moves.

Students then competed in a “tank” game. In this game, ten students lay side-by-side while one student rides a folding table on top of the other ten. The bottom students then roll in unison, moving the student on the table like a tank. The pink team, comprised mainly of flag football players, crushed it, securing the score at 3-1.

The teams then competed in a medley race with wheelbarrowing, piggybacks, crab walks, and bear crawls. Seniors Neil Anderson and Matthew Hughes narrowly won this event for the blue team; 3-2 for the pink team

It all came down to the last event: The Rizzathon. Students from either team would take the microphone and drop a pickup line. Whichever team cheered the loudest for their team’s pickup line won.

After the first round, the teachers called a “re-rizz” from top performers Ana Tausinga and Leo Calleros.

Tausinga hyped up the pink crowd with, “Are you lightning? Because you could be McQueen.” The pink team erupted, rewarding the baller pickup line.

Calleros went next, “Are you a parking ticket? Because you’ve got ‘fine’ written all over you.” The blue team went absolutely feral with cheers. The teacher judges conferred and rewarded the win to the blue team, tying the score.

As a tie-breaker, each team had three chances to have the loudest victory cry. Pink Team, Pink Team what’s your cry? “V-I-C-T-O-R-Y”! Blue Team, Blue Team, what’s your cry “V-I-C-T-O-R-Y”! The teacher judges crowned the pink team victorious.

The blue team did not take well to the loss. “That thing was more scripted than the NBA!” Camryn Wright complained.

Win or lose, the Bulldogs had a great time. Sophomore Maia Marchant commented that the assembly “was pretty fun!”
“I really felt our school spirit come alive!” she said.
