The Virgin Valley High School chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) inducted 19 new members for the 2023-2024 school year during a ceremony held Tuesday, February 28.

The Induction Ceremony started off with a warm welcome from NHS advisor Steve White. Chapter president Logan Cude. Cude then shared the achievements of NHS; achievements such as high scholastic standards and dedicating thirty hours of service to the community.

Cude then recognized all of the seniors in the chapter for their efforts in hardwork and dedication, great academic achievement, and outstanding service in the community. These seniors included Logan Cude, Oscar Diaz, Talon Easton, Arianne Gardner, Ollin Guzman, Dakota Hafen, Tyra Ludvigson, Yadira Muro, Neveah Musser, Dantzel Park, Gabby Potter, Brynne Tedford, Evia Toone, Paola Trujillo, and Jaelin Worthen.

Current chapter members then shared each of the five pillars of NHS: scholarship, leadership, service, character, and fellowship.

NHS vice president Tyra Ludvigson spoke about scholarship and lit the orange candle which represented great scholarship.

VP Paola Trujillo shared on leadership saying “In becoming leaders, we will gain experience that can benefit us later in our lives.”

She invited all members that “to lead is a charge each of us should take!” Trujillo then lit the green candle of leadership.

Senior member Danztel Park discussed service. “Willingness to work for the benefit of those in need… is the quality we seek in our membership,” Parkl said. “As we give of ourselves, we realize the joy it brings to us.” Then she lit the white candle of service.

Vice president Oscar Diaz lit the blue candle of character. “It is the force of character that guides one through life,” Diaz added. “Once developed, character grows steadily. Character is achieved and not received.”

Senior member Evia Toone lit the final pink candle of fellowship. “And when we strive for scholarship, leadership, service, and character, we must do it in a spirit of unity- a spirit of fellowship,” Toone said. “We must work together to perpetuate these high ideals.”
The inductees then stood and repeated the pledge of membership.

“I’m so glad to have the opportunity to be a part of the Honor Society and get involved in my community,” said new inductee Lincoln Toone. “It is a great way to give back and to work with good people.”

VVHS principal Michael Wilson shared in the excitement of the evening as he welcomed the newest additions of the chapter.

Cude then announced the upcoming officers. Each position was elected by the current members of the NHS. The 2023-2024 president will be Benjamin Nelson, assisted by three vice presidents: Natalie Plancarte Sandoval of service projects, Nichelle Thornton over service projects, and Emma Avila over member communications.

Nelson then addressed the crowd and recognized the seniors once more. “I am very excited for this next year and what it will entail for the 2023 and 2024 Honor Society!” Nelson commented.
“Honor Society has been such a big part of my life,” said Cude. “I love this community and being involved is something I would recommend to everyone. I’m so excited for the upcoming chapters and the amazing impact they will leave on Mesquite!”

The NHS is a service-oriented association whose main focus is on giving back to the community. It was established by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) in 1921. The Virgin Valley chapter was started over forty years ago in 1980. Because of this, parents who were once members of the club were able to watch their own children be inducted into the same program!
