The Progress
Relay for a Cause event was held at Hughes Middle School in Mesquite on Friday, March 24. The race was held to raise money for the Mesquite Cancer Help Society. More than $850 was raised for the Society in the event.
There were 36 teams with around 4-6 students on a team for a total of 150 students participating. The captains organized their teams and each participant paid $5 to race.
Some teams ran the relay race and other teams just walked the route which followed the path around the middle school and along the river behind the school. Running teams went 27 times around the school while walkers went 14 times.
Water stations were available along the path and all received a snack and water at the end of the race.
Captains of winning teams were: Krew Perry, Mason Blazzard and Charlie Davis and Cameron Tew.
A t-shirt was given to all the students who participated. The T-shirt included a quote printed on the front: “Be somebody who makes everybody feel they are somebody.”
This is the theme of the school’s Hope Squad which managed the relay event along with the Hughes Student Council.
HOPE Squad members were nominated by fellow students as someone they could turn to if they felt sad or lonely. The Hope Squad looks for students who just need to be noticed and need a friendly hello or might feel left out of an activity.
Team captains were: Kamzlee Dalton, Hattie Blazzard, Kaelyn ORourke, Mia Gardlner, Lexie Walker, Itzel Siordia, Elizabeth Hughes, Arabelle Whitebean, Eli Mejia, Juan Gomez, Lia Palomar, Alia Remishevskiy, Pamela Jimenez, Natali Aguilar, Halle Abbott, Ian Jones, Brandy Sonnenber, Jager Frei, Julissa, Gomez, Kyra Jensen, Alana Cortez, Estefani Aguilar, Weston Ludin, Kalbe Cowley, Brea Park, Katelee Dalton, Taylor Blazzard, Brooke Zarate, Ezequiel Plancarte, Brian Makiadi, Weston Hafen, and Zach Taylor.
Organizers of the event expressed appreciation to Aubrie Olsen, HOPE Squad advisor; and Hughes teachers Nicki Cardon, Kim Wilson and Mrs. Brotherson.

It is with humility and joy that we at the Mesquite Cancer HELP Society appreciate and are truly grateful for the efforts of Aubrey Olson, home squad advisor, Nikki Cardon, Kim Wilson, and Mrs. Brotherson, for the hard work in putting together “ Relay for a Cause”. To all the participants, know that we are especially thrilled to know that our young people are interested in helping make such a wonderful cause come to fruition through their participation.
Many thanks and blessings, Yoli Bell- Founder
