The Progress
Its spring time in Nevada and the Clark County Fair & Rodeo is here again in Logandale. There will be a rodeo, livestock shows, art and home exhibitions and great food – to name a few. But one of the main attractions at the Fair is the midway carnival.
For the past fifteen years Danny Brown has brought his Browns Amusements carnival to the Clark County Fair. Brown has owned this carnival for 27 years. He said that it is sort of an inherited love. His daddy also owned a carnival.
Brown Amusements is one of the best in the nation, known for its well maintained equipment and safety culture.
“I am proud of the fact that the Outdoor Amusement Business Association (OABA) has qualified us with their Circle of Excellence award, that is handed out every three years,” Brown said in an interview last week. “(The OABA) gives the carnivals a three-day inspection and every location we open at also inspects us before opening. We work hard to keep our equipment up and safe.”
When Brown’s troupe comes to town it rolls up with about 50 vehicles and 100 employees. It takes about a day-and-a-half to get it all set up.
Brown stated the down time for Brown’s Amusement is the months between November and January. During their down months, the crew spends the time doing maintenance and painting the equipment.
“I have very little turnover with my help,” he said. “About 98 percent stay with me for years. Having experienced employees helps keep our safety record good. They know right away if they hear an odd sound coming from the equipment.”
Brown carries bunkhouse vehicles for his staff to sleep in and a travelling cook to make the meals.
Brown said that he has been in the carny business for 42 years now. During that time there have been many changes in rules and regulations for the organization to keep up with. “Anything that happens in America happens to us too,” he said.
New this year at the Clark County Fair will be the Star Trooper ride. The carnival will also have the Rock-o-Plane that was new at the Fair last year. Of course, they will also be bringing all of the old favorites like Freak Out, Gravitron, Yo Yo, Zero Gravity and the notorious Zipper.
“I just love coming to Moapa Valley for the fair because I grew up in Utah and have family in St George and Price,” Brown said.
