M.V. Heroes Night To Be Held

The entire Moapa Valley community is invited to attend a night of food, fun and festivity at the second annual Moapa Valley Heroes Night on Monday, April 24 beginning at 5:30 pm at the Logandale Sports Complex.

Top billing at the event will be a series of expo softball games played by teams fielded by Moapa Valley resident police officers, local firefighters and athletes from the Moapa Valley High School team.

“Last year we played flag football but we decided to change to softball this year because we all got injured,” joked Moapa Valley Fire District Chief Stephen Neel. “None of us are getting any younger, you know!”

The fun will include bounce houses for the kids, a dunk tank, the Mercy Air helicopter, fire engines, an appearance by Smokey the Bear and more.

Neel said that the district will have its fire prevention trailer on display for kids to learn about what to do if there is a fire in their house.
“There will be lots for the kids to do,” Neel said. “It will be a great night for families.”

The volunteer firefighters will be grilling up a free meal of hamburgers and hotdogs at the event.
They will also be taking donations and selling raffle tickets to support the district’s new youth Explorer program

“The Explorer program is an opportunity for local youth to get real-life training in fire fighting and emergency medical services careers,” Neel said. “It has received a really good response.”

Neel emphasized that no public funding from the district’s tax base goes toward the Explorer program. Instead the district raises funds for the program through community efforts. Chief among these efforts is this event, he said.

Neel said that Monday’s event is just meant to be a fun, family-friendly time for the Moapa Valley community.
“It is an event to show appreciation for our first responders in town,” he said. “It is just a good time to get out and enjoy the weather and interact with our neighbors. Everyone is welcome!”
