The Virgin Valley High School student council attended the annual Nevada State Conference of the Nevada Association of Student Councils (NASC) last weekend. The event was hosted by Clark High School in Las Vegas.

The conference brings all student councils from the regions of Nevada together to learn about leadership, communication, and to meet new friends.

The theme for this year’s statewide conference was “NASC State 2023, The Musical!” This exciting broadway-theme made for the perfect themed Junior Council (JC) groups. Each JC group was named after a different musical or aspect of the Big Apple.

In addition, each general session of the conference had a different musical theme. Inspiring messages from the musical Dear Evan Hansen’s “You Will be Found” and Wicked’s “Popular” reminded the audience of over 900 high school students that they are seen and to hold true to their voice.

In the evening general sessions, NASC arranged for keynote speakers to address the crowd.
Kyle Wilkon shared his acronym “HERO” which stands for Help, Engage Respond, Own your power. He then left the students with his HERO challenge: To make one positive difference every day in the life of someone else.

The Amazing Tei Street also addressed the audience, reminding the students that “Motion gives the illusion of action.” She then invited everyone to “Don’t sing ‘Man in the Mirror,’ be the Man in the Mirror” alluding to NASC’s tradition of singing and dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.”

Virgin Valley was excited as they sent two JC leaders, Travis Terry and Tyra Ludvigson, for the State conference: a first in over 4 years of attending! The pair’s musical theme for their JC group was “Little Shop of Horrors!” as Terry played lead Seymour in Virgin Valley’s past production of the show. The two had a blast with their JC group; each group consisted of 14-16 student council members from different schools all over the state.

Along with Terry and Ludvigson, Virgin Valley sent nine delegates and two advisors to the conference. Head Student Council Advisor Robert Nelson was nominated for NASC’s “Advisor of the Year Award.”

All the local delegates absolutely loved the conference and the memories that came with it.
“State was one of the best high school experiences I’ve ever been able to be a part of,” said upcoming senior class vice president, Jake Hafen. “It was really hard at first having to meet new people but by the time we left, I was sad to leave everyone that I had the chance to connect with over the three days. I will always remember my first state experience and the amazing members of the VVHS council I got to spend it with!”
